Description
Better to Have Loved: The Life of Judith Merril by Judith Merril and Emily Pohl-Weary. Toronto: Between the Lines Press, 2002. * Better to Have Loved: The Life of Judith Merril by Judith Merril and Emily Pohl-Weary seeks to tell part of the eclectic life of the author, anthologist and science fiction personality Judith Merril. Merril died in 1997 at the age of seventy-four with her memoirs incomplete. This volume has been constructed by Pohl-Weary, Merril's granddaughter, from prepared autobiographical material enhanced with interviews, personal letters, and other written works (some of which were published previously). The book begins with a chronology listing significant events in Merril's life, followed by introductions by both authors. The main body of the text presents episodic memoirs and events in a more or less sequential order. It concludes with two appendices, the first listing "The Work of Judith Merril" and the second offering a dramatis personae, "Some of the People in Judith Merril's 's Life." It is a visually attractive volume, well laid out and printed on good quality paper. The cover illustration boasts a wonderful s hot of Merril's face set against a background of stars, flanked at one side by richly colored jackets from several of her books.
